In the pilot application, the 1300-meter route, that was conducted within the boundaries of the Middle East Technical University (ODTU) during the infrastructure activities:
- In order to advance monorail on an as much as possible environment friendly and stable slope route, the available landscape height differences and the route was determined by topographic analysis.
- Physical properties of the digging process such as ground toughness and fill sand were taken into consideration during the preparation of the basic projects.
- Decision to use profiles of standard heights of 12 meters was taken after the static and dynamic calculations made for the rail sections and primary connections, moving weights, earthquake and wind effects and taking into consideration the differences in temperature.
To complete the upper structure of the monorail system:
- The weight capacity of the vehicles was determined based on the number of students, academic staff and administrative staff. The wagons that made up the vehicles were constructed from a steel lower chassis, aluminum bodywork and composite body finishing. To increase sound and heat insulation inside the wagons high quality insulation materials were used within the bodywork.
- The design of the bogy, which acts as the bond between the rail and the vehicle and the thruster of the system, appeared after confirmation by static and dynamic analysis undertaken in the cyber environment. Design criterions such as, the position and number of wheels that make the vehicle follow the rail and the position of these wheels on the bogy, design of the transmission units, weight carried by critical parts and vibration of the system, were developed by this method.
